TIL (via Dinesh Chakrabaty on the Future Histories podcast) that sand might be the third largest black market in the world. Turns out that it pulls in around $300bn per year; it’s vital to the construction industry. Also: desert sand is no use because the grains are worn to spheres by the wind.
